Car data check will highlight outstanding car loans

26/06/2008

Buyers of second hand vehicles can now purchase a car data check from the RAC to establish whether the vehicle has an existing car loan secured against it. For just £5, the report will tell a prospective buyer all sorts of important details about a specific vehicle, such as whether a used car is stolen, has an outstanding car loan, is an insurance write-off or has had previous plates. The RAC has also backed an initiative by the Trading Standards Institute and the Hertfordshire police to educate young car buyers about the potential pitfalls of buying used cars. Parents and guardians have been called on to become more actively involved in their childrens used car buying decisions, particularly as safety is often a concern. Nicola Johnson, Manager of RAC Inspections, said: "Youngsters or first timers looking for a used car bargain are entering a minefield and are unlikely to have the right level of knowledge to know what to look for. This is where a mechanically minded friend or family member can help. Better still, parents or guardians would be wise to invest in an independent vehicle inspection which could ultimately save money or even a life." The importance of getting used cars checked over before making a purchase is the main message the RAC, TSI and Hertfordshire Police want to put across. Young people often do not have the experience to be able to tell without help whether theyre getting a good deal. This is especially important for those young people who buy with the help of a car loan, as they could end up making payments on an over-priced or unreliable vehicle.
