Car loan customers covering for uninsured drivers

02/08/2008

UK car loan customers and other drivers are making up a massive £500m insurance shortfall every year - that's around £31 a head. The extra money is covering people who do not have car insurance. The figures do not include the cost of accidents caused by uninsured drivers.

A recent YouGov survey shows that 87% of motorists feel the Government isn't doing enough to stop people driving without insurance. They want tougher penalties so that car loan customers are not forced to pay additional premiums to cover other people.

The survey shows that 68% of motorists involved in an accident with an uninsured driver had to incur liability and either claim on their own insurance (49%) - potentially jeopardising no claims bonuses that may have been accrued - or pay for the incident themselves (19%). Of the survey's respondents, 12% claimed to have been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver.

Theresa Villiers, Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, spoke out in support of car loan customers and other insured drivers: "It is high time the Government took decisive action on this problem. The average penalty for an uninsured driving offence is a fraction of the cost of a year's car insurance, incentivising law-breaking ... That cannot be right, and I hope Ruth Kelly will pay attention to the 87% of motorists who have told this survey that she should do something about it. Motorists have had enough of footing the bill for uninsured drivers."
