GE Money car loan blunder

02/07/2008

A large car loan finance company has been left red-faced after highly sensitive customer data was released - to another customer! John McGough from Haltwhistle, Northumberland, applied to GE Money for a car loan. When he opened the letter containing his car loan agreement, he was stunned to see lots of other documents fall out of the envelope. The documents were the personal details of seven other customers and included driving licences, bank and credit card statements, and even copies of passports. The blunder was uncovered by tabloid newspaper The People, who interviewed Mr. McGough yesterday. "I was stunned - there were pages and pages of other customers personal data. If the letter had been sent to a criminal instead of me they would have had a field day," said McGough. GE Money has more than 10 million UK customers. The companys assets are estimated to be in the region of £70 billion, and the following statement appears on its website: "We respect you and the information you entrust to us. Our most important asset is your trust. Keeping your private information secure is a top priority and will not be compromised."
