Justice for car finance customers subsidising untaxed vehicles

10/10/2008

In August we reported that UK car finance customers and other motorists are making up a £500m insurance shortfall every year to cover drivers who do not have car insurance.
It now looks as though such individuals are receiving their comeuppance.

People who drive without insurance often drive without paying their road tax - and these people are having their vehicles towed away in increasing numbers.

Plaid Cymru AM Chris spoke out in support of law abiding car finance customers: "I'm encouraged the DVLA is catching more drivers and clamping them or disposing of the vehicles and I hope this crackdown is boosted further. I fear there are clear links with vehicles having no tax disc and a lack of insurance.

"The consequences for the law abiding motorist and pedestrian can be devastating in the event of an accident. In some areas there are a high number of untaxed motors. Often this is associated with poor car maintenance and inconsiderate driving. The authorities need to give this issue a high priority."

8,240 vehicles were clamped in Wales in the last 12 months: 2,469 were disposed of by the authorities. These figures are almost double last year's, when 4,990 vehicles were clamped and 1,840 were disposed of.
