Motorists warned about car loan scams

Prospective car buyers in North Lincolnshire are being warned about a spate of car loan scams.

Trading Standards have recently investigated five scams operating in the area. Cars supplied on loan are sold on privately to unsuspecting buyers before the loan has been repaid.

The vehicles then get repossessed by the car loan company, and the new owners are left out-of-pocket and without their vehicles.

The Trading Standard's team is warning motorists to be extra-vigilant, especially as one of the cases concerned a vehicle bought from a popular auction website. People thinking of buying a car through a private sale should carry out additional checks on the vehicle, particularly if it seems very cheap for its model and age.

Trading Standards advises asking the seller questions about any car loans attached to the vehicle and to get evidence that they have been settled. The vehicle should come with its original logbook.
